The best way to explain the difference between chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments is to explain the benefits of each. Each treatment has a specific purpose and its own set of benefits. The two treatments can be used in conjunction with one another to rejuvenate your skin and promote cellular turn over.
Microdermabrasion is a manual exfoliation of your skin, using a machine with a wand containing a diamond or crystal bit and suction. The wand is gently run over the surface of your skin to remove dead skin cells. This service encourages a rapid turnover of skin cells and stimulates collagen production. The treatment can be done in multiple passes and the client and esthetician can choose the level of intensity for the service based on the client's needs and treatment plan. A client who has had a microdermabrasion treatment will experience softer, smoother, brighter, clearer skin. There is no downtime with microdermabrasion as it is a non-invasive treatment.
A typical treatment plan with microdermabrasion would consist of getting the service once per month to achieve a deep exfoliation and promote healthy, glowing skin. Having a treatment performed monthly assists your serum and moisturizer in penetrating deeper into the skin, which increases their effectiveness.
Microdermabrasion can be used prior to a chemical peel as well. We advise clients to have a microdermabrasion treatment done two weeks prior to a chemical peel to help the peels solution penetrate deeper and improve the peeling process.
Chemical peels, also known as clinical exfoliation, are done by applying a chemical solution to the face. These solutions exfoliate, retexturize and promote collagen and elastin production. Unlike microdermabrasion, which exfoliates the surface of the skin, chemical peels penetrate the skin and exfoliate from below the top layer. Chemical peels are recommended for anyone who is looking to treat fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, scarring, or those looking improve the overall look and feel of their skin. Chemical peels are an acid or a combination of acids such as salicylic, glycolic, lactic, malic or retinoic acid.
Chemical Peels are most effective when done in a series, typically a month apart. Don’t be fooled by the name of this service, you do NOT need to peel for the treatment to be effective. Peeling or flaking may occur noticeably or it may be very subtle. Depending on the level of activity in the peel you may require 5-7 days post-treatment for recovery time. Chemical peels are recommended for anyone looking to renew their skin or address skin issues but don’t want to have the downtime of a laser treatment. Cara Skin Care offers three types of peels; Grape Enzyme, Glycolic, and Salicylic – all of which offer little to no downtime. Each type of peel targets a different problem, and each has varying levels of activity.
