What does toner do?

What does toner do?

Toner seems to be the one product in skincare that is often overlooked.  One question that we get regularly is "What does toner do?".  First, let us say toner is a must, and using an alcohol-free toner is best for your skin.  Toners were originally created to help with balancing the pH of the skin after using old-school cleansers that were harsh on the skin.  We have come a long way with skin care and no longer see such an imbalance (depending on your cleanser of choice of course). The toners of today add so much to your skincare routine and should be used.

To answer the recurring question "What does toner do?" we have 4 benefits to adding it to your skincare routine.

1. Added hydration.

After you wash your face or after getting out of the shower you may notice your face feels tight and dry. Well, that's because water is an unstable molecule that likes to bond with other water molecules to stabilize.  So, to keep water from leaving your skin we use a toner to hold moisture in your skin. Essentially any time you have to rinse your face, whether it be cleaning, bathing, post-mask or exfoliation, you can apply toner immediately to keep that essential hydration in place.

2. Restore the pH balance of your skin.

Many cleansers on the market today are too alkaline for our skin.  When we stip the skin of all natural oils and this creates a dry and irritated skin.  This signals the skin to go into overdrive to correct the imbalance, which can result in overproduction of oil.  Using a toner helps to get the skin back to a balanced state.

3. Minimized the appearance of pores.

Toners typically come with a cleaning agent added to them, which helps to reduce the appearance of the pore by removing anything left over from cleansing.  Leaving clean pores free of impurities which allows the pore to tighten and reduce the appearance of the size.

4. Reduces the production of oil.

As we mentioned with balancing the pH of your skin, normalizing the pH reduces the skins need to overproduce oil.  So if you do suffer from oily skin this may be your saving grace.  A gentle cleanser and good toner could really help with control the overproduction of oil, leaving you with the skin you always wished you had!
